Ageing Better Ideas

We are collecting ideas for the next stage of an exploration into how to use digital technology, and the innovations that technology supports, to help people enjoy a better later life. You can add your own idea, and/or comment and vote on ideas already posted. Details of the exploration and the main challenges here. The focus is now Living Well in the Digital Age.

In order to promote innovation I think we should ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Co-design with older people and aim for simplicity

One of the strongest themes from the recent SEEFA symposium - reported here http://socialreporter.com/?p=3168 - was that designers should work closely with users, and that tech solutions should aim for just-enough rather than feature rich.

    • Make sure every single home in the UK has a fit for purpose connection to the internet.

It is a complete superfarce to attempt total digital inclusion when a third of the population has a substandard or non existent connection. Whilst we allow politicians to waste public money patching up an old phone line so that a few near cabinets can go faster we ignore all those on long lines or repeatedly mended ancient cables. There are millions in this position, many of them elderly. Even if some elderly folk do have a good enough connection their friends and relatives wont. Meanwhile we waste valuable resources trying to educate and engage them. They go home and it…

      • Develop existing familiar technologies like TVs

There are now a number of add-ons that connect TVs to the Internet, like the Simplicity TV-PC http://www.simplicitycomputers.co.uk/tv-pc/ and Chromecast, which can be used with an Android device http://goo.gl/MEoDqF

        • Campaign for free wifi in residential care homes

With free wifi residents could use tablets to connect with friends and family, and a host of other activities. Ideally staff would be able to provide support - but if not, volunteers might be able to help and run sessions like these in one of the other ideas http://goo.gl/64G4HL

          • Stop re-inventing the wheel - build on past research and experience. But how?

One of the strong themes to emerge from discussion of provocations and challenges http://goo.gl/oRzA4Y in our exploration is the way research is duplicated, and experience is not shared. In some ways it is re-assuring that discussion here largely mirrors conclusion in this work for Nominet Trust a couple of years ago http://dtlater.wikispaces.com/Report+sections However, to make the most of past work we need to chunk up content in ways that make it easy to re-use.

            • Map people and organisations who might promote and support these ideas

If we mapped the ideas and clustered them, as described here http://goo.gl/gm4N7o we could then look for people and organisations with assets, map them, and develop connections

              • Ask the children in the schools to come and show groups how to play games.

Schools now encourage children to be entrepreneurs and make things. How about them making live better for elderly people? It will give them a feeling of pride, help older people forget their fears, and see that the internet can be a fun place and they don't need to learn microsoft frikkin office to use it. Online centres and courses bore the pants off people who don't want to learn about fonts and spreadsheets. The future is tablets and smart phones. Not boring old computers.

                • Develop person-centric alternative to "Digital Divide"

Instead of using a metaphor that suggests the challenge is getting people across to an online world with one-size solutions, focus on enabling individuals with the tech they need within their community - and then extend that community of connections.

                  • Integrate digital inclusion and digital health care innovations

Tony Watts argues that integrating personalised digital healthcare with action to help older people use technology and the internet would provide benefits all round. Tony presented his ideas recently at the launch of an EU-funded report - details here http://goo.gl/x6fU72.
Tony said "Simpler touch-screen tablets or smart TVs open up the online world of opportunities and connections with friends and family.
Digital healthcare, tailored to the individual, can monitor conditions, connect with carers and health services, help people stay in their homes, and reduce costs".

                    • Help organisations in the ageing field adopt social technology

One of the main challenges to emerge from the exploration is that many organisations supporting older people are limited in their understanding and adoption of social technology - and so find it difficult engage with digital innovation. Who could offer support? Would some key organisations - and individuals - get together and take a lead?

                      • Look for benefits for business in serving older people

Older people are an important and growing market, as this report for Nominet Trust identified http://dtlater.wikispaces.com/Provocation+5 If this is recognised, there will be great focus on design of appropriate products and services

                        • Develop the "house of care" model: digitally-enabled citizen supported by rings of care

In this blog post http://goo.gl/LExFna Roz Davies sets out a model putting the citizen-patient at the centre of an ecosystem of support. "The diagram below presents a vision of patient-centred care with the house of care in the centre surrounded and supported by a ring of digital health tools and connected to citizens/patients and communities by a ring of citizenship approaches." This would relate to the other ideas about mapping the ecosystem, and developing an assessment kit to personalise what people need.

Everyone needs a different package of digital tools that meet their needs and circumstances. This simple card game could be developed to help people play through what's appropriate for them, in terms of activities, software and devices . Here's a how a "minimal technology assessment kit" might work http://socialreporter.com/?p=2939

A programme to look at the plethora of apps, devices and wearable technology that may be able to help people with specific medical conditions or who are not able bodied.
There are alot of good ideas out there, but often no simple guide to what's good / bad and what can / can't make a difference
Apps, Touchscreen Technology and Wearable Devices can help an older person continue to play a part in the community & communicate with friends / relatives.

                              • Partner with on-line educators - such as Khan Academy for development of video "how to's"

Utilise the expertise and reach of on-line learning organisations - such as Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/) to build a set of training resources for (a) train the trainer and (b) for end users. All material would be video-based - arguably the best method of learning, e.g. 2-minute "how to" sessions.

                                • Provide more informal 'Show and Tell' or 'Tea and Tablets' etc.. sessions for older people

These session would seek to remove the fear and apprehension some older people have about being on-line or even picking up a Tablet for the first time.
These should also be tuned to reflect the culture and diversity of the communities in which they are delivered.

                                    • Make learning about digital tech part of a celebration

John Popham is a great advocate of making learning fun - and to demonstrate what's possible with limited resources he organised a Connected Christmas party within five days of floating the idea http://goo.gl/65aJ8V How could we build on that?

                                      • Support small independent initiatives providing advice on ageing better

Small independent organisations that don't rely on grants have to be particularly responsive to their market of older people, their friends and families. One example - http://www.myageingparent.com/ - includes a substantial technology section alongside help on health, finance, legal and other issues. Any other examples? What might help these initiatives flourish alongside bigger, funded organisations?

                                        • Promote innovation within Big Lottery Fund's Ageing Better programme

Over the next five years 15 local partnerships will receive £82 million for work on ageing better and combating social isolation. They could provide the core of a wider innovation network if BIG would support the idea of developing and sharing experience. First ideas on that here http://goo.gl/bKnDpF and in the Ageing Better exploration http://goo.gl/fws7f5
